Amateur Hockey Leagues formed the basis of hockey as we know it today. One of the earliest trophies awarded after the Stanley Cup was the Allan Cup, currently representing the best amateur team in a Canada Senior League..

Allan Cup

The Allan Cup is the trophy currently awarded to the national senior (21 and over) amateur men's hockey champions of Canada. The trophy was donated in 1908 by Sir H. Montague Allan to replace the Stanley Cup. While the Stanley Cup originated as an amateur trophy, the proceeds from the Cup games went to the competing teams. This led to abuses of the principles of amateurism as clubs gathered star players from all parts of the country. In 1908 the Stanley Cup was awarded to the best professional team.

The cup was almost the Grey Cup. Albert Henry George Grey, the popular Governor General of Canada from 1904 to 1911, planned for the Grey Cup to be awarded to the top Canadian senior hockey team, but was trumped by Sir Montague Allan, who donated the Allan Cup. Undeterred, Grey declared that his hardware should be awarded to the winner of the nation's rubgy football championship

The Alan Cup was originally given to the Victoria Hockey Club of Montreal to present to the champion of their league, who then could be challenged by champions of other leagues. The first winners of the Cup were the Ottawa Cliffsides, and the first challengers were the Queen's University club of Kingston, Ontario. The Allan Cup became a more popular Cup to pursue each year resulting in the challenges becomng so numerous, that it was impossible for any team holding the Cup to defend it.

In 1914 the Canadian Amateur Hockey Association (CAHA) was formed as a national governing body for amateur hockey. In 1915 the challenge system was replaced by the CAHA with a series of national playoffs. In 1928 the trustees turned over responsibility for the Cup to the CAHA. In 1994 the CAHA merged with Hockey Canada to form the Canadian Hockey Association.

Beginning in 1920, when hockey was first introduced to the Olympic Games, the reigning Allan Cup champion was chosen to represent Canada. This continued until Father David Bauer introduced a national hockey program that produced a team of selects for the 1964 Olympic Games.

In 1984, the classification of teams competing for the Allan Cup was changed to Senior AAA. The Cup has been won by teams from every province and from the Yukon, as well as by teams from the United States which played in Canadian leagues. The Allan Cup rules state that a challenging team must come from a Canadian senior amateur hockey association but that didn’t mean that the team itself must be Canadian. In 1970, the Spokane Jets became the first American team to win the Allan Cup. Teams from Spokane won the Cup four times between 1970 and 1980 and from 1994 to 1996, the Warroad Lakers out of Minnesota captured the Cup three consecutive times.

The Allan Cup remains the oldest amateur hockey title in Canada. The current Allan Cup tournament brings together the top amateur teams from Canadian Associations, contesting for the championship in one host city. Previously it has been a seven game series for the championship, a best of five or three series, a total goal series or a Cup Challenge game prior to 1915.
