The first of the early recognized professional hockey leagues in North America was the Maritime Professional Hockey League. Was formed from the Interprovincial Professional Hockey League in 1912.

Maritime Professional Hockey League (1912-1914)

The Maritime Professional Hockey League was formed from the Interprovincial Professional Hockey League (1910-1911). The MPHL reorganized in the 1914-15 season into the Eastern Professional Hockey League (1914-15).

In the first season there were four teams, they played each other six times, three home, three away. In the second season there were five teams, they played each other four times, two home, two away. In the final season there were four teams, they played each other eight times, four home, four away.
