Amateur Hockey Leagues formed the basis of hockey as we know it today, but starting in the early 1900's the leagues started to disband and reform as professional leagues. One of the first to do this was the Ontario Professional Hockey League . Like many others it's history was short lived..
Ontario Professional Hockey League (1907-11)
The Ontario Professional Hockey League was founded in 1907. It was one of the first professional leagues in North America. The league operated from 1907-11.
The league started with four teams, grew to six teams for the second season but finished with four teams in each of the last two seasons. The founding members were the Berlin Dutchmen, Brantford Indians, Guelph Professionals and Toronto Professionals.

Ottawa Senators, as champions of the Eastern Canada Hockey Association, took over the Stanley Cup in 1909. A challenge was accepted by the Cup trustees from the Winnipeg Shamrocks. The series could not be arranged because of the lateness of the season. No other challenges were made in 1909. The following season, 1909-10, the Senators accepted two challenges as defending Stanley Cup champions. In January of 1910, two game total goal series were arranged with Galt and Edmonton. |
