Minor professional hockey leagues are the backbone of the NHL. These leagues over the years have served as training grounds for the NHL teams. Entertaining hockey in their own right and offering non NHL players a chance to earn a living.

Eastern Hockey League (1979-1981)

The Eastern Hockey League (1979-1981) was formed when the Northeastern Hockey League was renamed the for the 1979-80 season. the league was an attempt at reviving the previous league name recognition but survived for only two seasons. At a meeting of the EHL team owners on July 19, 1981, it was decided to fold the EHL and create the Atlantic Coast Hockey League.
