Amateur Hockey Leagues formed the basis of hockey as we know it today, but starting in the early 1900's the leagues started to disband and reform as professional leagues. One of the first to do this was the Canadian Hockey Association. Like many others it's history was short lived.
Canadian Hockey Association (1909-10)
With the onset of professional hockey, the Eastern Canadian Amateur Hockey Association dissolved and reformed in 1909 as the Canadian Hockey Association, becoming the first major professional hockey league in Canada.
The Montreal Wanderers were excluded from the new league and decided to form a rival league, the National Hockey Association which began play in January 1910. Within a month the Canadian Hockey Association went out of business and merged into the National Hockey Association.
