Minor professional hockey leagues are the backbone of the NHL. These leagues over the years have served as training grounds for the NHL teams. Entertaining hockey in their own right and offering non NHL players a chance to earn a living.
Canadian-American Hockey League (1926-1936)
The Canadian American Hockey League, founded in 1926, was a minor pro league, based in Springfield, Massachusetts, USA. The league operated between 1926-27 and 1935-36.
The founding teams were the Boston Tigers, New Haven Eagles, Providence Reds, Quebec Castors and Springfield Indians. The Philadelphia Arrows joined the league in its second season and Quebec were replaced by Newark Bulldogs in 1928-29.
Newark dropped out after one season and in 1931-32 the Boston Tigers became the Boston Cubs as the Bronx Tigers joined the league. The Bronx team were replaced by the Quebec Castors and Springfield folded after thirteen games in the 1932-33 season.
In the final season (1935-1936) the Philadelphia became the Philadelphia Ramblers and Quebec dropped out. In 1936 the Canadian American Hockey League amalgamated with the International Hockey League to form the International American Hockey League.
